Windows XP - Always do the selected option

Reseting the "Always do the selected option" mode in Windows XP

Often one will install a new program that handles a new file type. Many of these will register themselves with the operating system so that when removable media is inserted, that contains that file type, the application is automatically launched. While this is usually convenient, it can also be frustrating when you decide to change the program used to respond to the "Autoplay" event later.

The following steps will let you remove any setting you may have made (eg. for card-insertion events which automatically open up your photo import software). Basically you need to disable the operating system's Autoplay defaults:

  1. Open My Computer
  2. Right-click on the CD-ROM / DVD drive or Card Reader, click on the AutoPlay tab
  3. In the drop-down list, select JPEG (or whatever file format you previously registered with the application.
  4. Select Prompt me each time to choose an action or Take no action, depending on how much automation you care for.
